Indoor Plant Care: What Actually Goes Wrong First

Indoor plant care goes wrong in two places first: water and light. How to check both, nine plants that cope with an ordinary flat, and the air myth.

Most houseplants that die do not die of neglect, and they do not die because they were a difficult species. They die in their first weeks after coming home, from too much water in a spot with too little light. Fix those two things and the rest of indoor plant care is maintenance.

That order matters, because it is the opposite of how the problem usually gets diagnosed. The plant looks unhappy, so it gets watered. The leaves keep yellowing, so it gets watered again. By the time anyone thinks about where the pot is standing, the roots have already been sitting wet in a dark corner for a month. This guide works through water first, then light, then the plants that forgive both.

Indoor Plant Care Starts With Water and Light

Sit in on any houseplant group for a week and the same questions come round. A bird of paradise sulking two months after it came home. A new office plant browning within its first week. Black spots on leaves, with nobody sure what the plant even is. A cutting rooted in a glass of water, and now what. Somebody asking which plants clean the air.

Almost none of those threads turn out to be about a rare pest or a bad plant. They are about a watering can and a window. The useful thing about that is how few checks it takes to tell which one you are dealing with – and both checks are free.

How to Tell When a Plant Actually Needs Water

Watering on a schedule is what causes the damage. A pot in a cool, dim hallway in November and the same pot on a sunny sill in June do not dry out at anything like the same rate, so a fixed Sunday-evening routine will drown one and starve the other.

The Royal Horticultural Society gives two checks instead. Water when the surface of the compost becomes dry, and pick the pot up: drier pots feel lighter than wet ones. After a couple of weeks of lifting the same pot you will know its full and empty weight by hand, which is faster and more reliable than any moisture meter.

The symptoms are also less ambiguous than they look, once you know which way round they run:

Note what is missing from that table: nothing is solved by feeding. Fertiliser cannot fix a root problem or a light problem, and a plant already under stress does not need more salts around its roots.

How Much Light Does That Spot Really Get?

Rooms are much darker than they feel. Eyes adjust, cameras adjust, plants do not. A spot a couple of steps back from a window can be receiving a small fraction of the light the sill gets, and nothing about standing in the room tells you that.

There is a test that needs no equipment. The RHS defines bright shade as bright light which does not cast a sharply defined shadow. So hold your hand up where the plant stands, on a bright but not sunny day, and look at the shadow on the wall behind:

  • A hard shadow with crisp edges – that is direct sun. Good for cacti and succulents, and enough to scorch a fern through glass in summer.
  • A soft shadow you can clearly make out – bright indirect light. This is what most houseplants want.
  • A shadow you have to look for – low light. A short list of plants will live here, and everything else will slowly stretch and thin out.
  • No shadow at all – too dark for a plant to grow, whatever the label promised.

Do the test where the plant actually is, not where you would like it to be. And do it again in October, because in northern Europe a windowsill loses a great deal of light between midsummer and midwinter while the room looks unchanged.

Nine Plants That Cope With an Ordinary Flat

"Easy" is not a property of a plant, it is the overlap between what the plant needs and what your room already provides. The nine below have wide tolerances, so that overlap is large. All figures are RHS growing conditions.

Read that table as a gradient rather than a list. The cast iron plant survives a corridor at 7 °C in a rented flat; the prayer plant is the one that will punish a dry, heated living room, and it is on the list to show where the line falls. If your shadow test came back faint, buy from the top three rows and ignore the rest for now.

The same logic applies outdoors, incidentally – a shady bed is not one condition either, which is why the plants for shade guide sorts them by dry, damp and deep shade before naming anything.

Do Houseplants Clean the Air?

No, and this is the one place where the popular answer is not just imprecise but wrong by several orders of magnitude.

The idea comes from a 1989 NASA report by B. C. Wolverton and colleagues, which measured how plants dealt with benzene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde. That work was real. The problem is what happened to it afterwards: the results were never rescaled to a room that has windows, doors and ventilation.

In 2019, Bryan Cummings and Michael Waring did the rescaling. They took 196 experimental results from twelve published studies and converted each into a clean air delivery rate, the same metric used to rate air purifiers. The median for a single potted plant came out at 0.023 m³ per hour. To match the removal that ordinary air exchange between outdoors and indoors already achieves, you would need 10 to 1,000 plants per square metre of floor space. Their paper is titled, without much room for interpretation, Potted plants do not improve indoor air quality.

Opening a window for a few minutes does more than a whole shelf of plants. That is not an argument against keeping plants – it is an argument for buying the ones you actually like looking after, rather than the ones a garden centre sign has labelled air-purifying.

Autumn and Winter Are the Hard Part

From late August onwards, three things change at once in a European home: the days shorten, the heating comes on, and the air dries out. Most houseplants are killed by the same watering routine that worked in July.

Growth slows, so water use drops. The RHS notes that in winter houseplants can be left a week or two without water, as long as the room is cool and does not fall below the plant's minimum tolerated temperature – which is the number in the last column of the table above, and the reason it is worth knowing.

Feeding follows the same curve. Feed during the growing season from March to October, then limit winter feeding to once a month. Dry air is the one problem that gets worse rather than better: stand pots on a saucer over a tray of moist gravel, group plants together so they share local humidity, and spray them if you will do it often enough to matter.

Planning Tip

Note each plant's minimum temperature and its light band when you buy it, then let Plantory remind you when watering should ease off for the winter. The point of writing it down is that the plant stops being a guess and starts being a plan.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Watering on a fixed day rather than checking the compost and the weight of the pot.
  • Feeding a sick plant. If the roots or the light are wrong, fertiliser makes it worse.
  • Leaving the pot standing in a full saucer. Drainage water needs to go away, not sit there.
  • Buying for the plant, not the room. Do the shadow test first, then choose.
  • Keeping the July watering routine into November, when the plant has stopped growing.

Summary

Indoor plant care comes down to three habits and one honest expectation. Check the compost and the weight of the pot instead of the calendar. Do the shadow test before you choose a plant rather than after it starts to fail. Ease off water and feed from October, and raise the humidity when the heating goes on. And treat air-purifying claims as decoration, because the measurements do not support them.
